The sink occupies an important place in every bathroom design. It’s the element around which all other bathroom fixtures are organized. Utilitarian in its design — it’s where you wash your hands and face and brush your teeth — a sink can also add to a bathroom’s ambiance and character. Bathroom vanities are popular fixtures for housing sinks in bathrooms. If you’re planning to install a new vanity or replace an existing vanity in your bathroom, explore the following guide to bathroom vanities.

What Are the Standard Bathroom Vanity Dimensions?

A vanity is a bathroom cabinet with a countertop. The countertop itself contains openings for the sink and faucet fixtures, and it offers space around the sink for toiletries. The area below the countertop makes a convenient place for storing cosmetics and grooming products, cleaning supplies, and extra toilet paper rolls.

Standard bathroom vanities are generally available in the following widths (presented here in inches): 24, 30, 36, 48, 60, and 72.

When it comes to vanity heights, you won’t find a standard height per se, but you will typically encounter vanities that average between 32 and 36 inches tall. When selecting a height for your bathroom vanity, keep in mind the people in your household who will be using it. If you have children, you may want to opt for a slightly shorter height to accommodate them.

The standard bathroom vanity depth ranges from 20 to 23 inches, with 21 inches being the average depth of a bathroom vanity. If you have a narrow bathroom layout, you can find shallow-depth vanities that range between 16 and 18 inches.

Double Vanities and Single-Sink Vanities

Before you plan to install a new vanity in your bathroom, consider how you intend to use the vanity. In a bathroom adjoining a master bedroom, you may opt for a vanity with a double-sink design. The double-sink vanities are available in wider widths, generally between 60 and 72 inches, compared to single-sink vanity styles.

For a smaller guest bathroom, a single-sink vanity tends to fit these spaces well. For even smaller powder rooms, you may choose to install a narrow-depth vanity that can fit into a corner or a wall-mounted vanity that helps you take advantage of vertical wall space inside the room.

Console Vanities

Console vanities have a sophisticated yet straightforward style ideal for bathrooms with a more open design. With its simple shape, a console vanity offers just enough countertop and counter storage space without having a bulky cabinet in the bathroom space.

Corner Vanities

Corner vanities offer a smart solution for incorporating a vanity into a small bathroom or powder room design. Besides offering you a storage cabinet for bathroom essentials, corner vanities also maximize space that would ordinarily go to waste in bathrooms.

Freestanding Vanities

Freestanding vanities represent the most traditional of the styles of bathroom vanities available. As their name suggests, freestanding vanities are stand-alone units that sit on the bathroom floor. Freestanding vanities are attached to the wall with mounting screws to provide added stability. These vanities also incorporate a more refined look to a bathroom space with their furniture-like design.

Wall-Mounted Vanities

Often referred to as floating vanities, wall-mounted vanities are attached directly to the wall. They are not supported by legs or cabinetry that rests on the floor. If you’re concerned about limited floor space in your bathroom or if you want to create a bathroom design with clean lines, then wall-mounted vanities can create the aesthetic you want. You’ll often find wall-mounted vanities in contemporary bathroom designs that emphasize an open floor plan.

Since these vanities are attached directly to the wall, you can adjust their height positioning on the wall to suit your needs.

Types of Vanity-Mounted Bathroom Sinks

The amount of space you have available in your bathroom often dictates what type of sink you can install in a bathroom vanity.

Above-Counter

This style of sink rests on top of the vanity countertop like a bowl. Tall, gooseneck faucets generally get mounted on the vanity countertop next to the sink. Alternatively, you can mount the faucets on the wall above the sink.

Drop-In (Also Known as Self-Rimming)

A drop-in sink is designed to fit into an opening cut in the vanity countertop and usually has a raised rim around the perimeter of the sink. The faucet for the sink protrudes through a hole that’s drilled into the sink. This sink type is the simplest to install in a vanity.

Undermount

An undermount sink gets attached underneath the finished opening in the countertop of the vanity. The faucet for the sink is mounted either on the countertop or in the wall above the sink. This type of sink installation in a vanity looks sleek and frees up space on the vanity countertop. Since there is no seam between the sink and vanity countertop to collect dirt and soap, this sink style is the easiest type to clean.

Bathroom Vanity Sink Sizes

Bathroom sinks come in standard oval and round designs. These sinks generally measure between 16 to 20 inches in diameter. Standard rectangular sinks average between 19 to 24 inches in width and 16 to 23 inches in length.

When selecting a sink for your vanity, consider how much space you have in your bathroom, the family members who will be using the sink, and your preferred faucet choices for the sink.
