When snow and ice melt faster than the ground beneath them thaws, that runoff has nowhere to go but toward your foundation. Freeze-thaw cycles compound the problem by widening existing cracks in foundation walls and window wells, giving water new entry points.

On top of that, Chicago’s combined storm and sanitary sewer system can back up during heavy snowmelt, forcing more water toward your sump pit right when it’s already working overtime. A sump pump running constantly in winter usually means the system is under real strain, not just a fluke cycle.

Power Outages and Winter Storm Risks

A pump can’t do anything if it has no power. Winter storms bring exactly the kind of conditions that knock out electricity, and weather-related power outages between 2014 and 2023 were nearly double those recorded between 2000 and 2009, according to Climate Central. The most frequent cause of float failure is a switch that’s stuck or tangled due to debris, rust, or accumulated gunk, often because a loose or missing lid let material fall into the pit. A float switch that fails silently can lead to a motor burning out from running dry, or worse, a basement that floods because the pump never turned on at all.

Sump Pit Cleaning and Discharge Line Inspection

Start by unplugging the pump before doing any hands-on work in the pit. Clear out any dirt, gravel, or buildup that has settled at the bottom. If you’ve noticed loud noises during operation, a debris-clogged impeller is often the culprit, so inspect and clean that area while the pump is powered down. When you’re done, replace the lid securely; a tight-fitting lid keeps future debris out and reduces the risk of another float switch jam.

Inspecting the Discharge Line for Blockages and Damage

Frozen discharge lines are one of the most common winter failure points we see, and they’re often caused by hoses that are too long, too narrow, or poorly pitched across the ground. Each freeze-thaw cycle can narrow the pipe a little more with ice, and a full blockage may lead to leaks, blowouts, or a pump that overheats trying to push against the obstruction. Even a pump running perfectly can’t protect your home if the discharge line itself is frozen shut or collapsed somewhere along its length.

Check that your discharge point sits at least 10 feet from the foundation, with 20 feet being a better target, and clear away any ice or snow blocking the exit point along with nearby window well drains. If you find a collapsed line, a poorly pitched section, or need to modify the discharge routing, that work should involve a licensed plumber familiar with Illinois and Chicago code requirements.

Confirming Backup Power for Winter Reliability

Standard sump pumps stop working the moment the power goes out, which is exactly when Chicago winter storms tend to strike. Backup systems generally fall into two categories: battery-powered units that kick in automatically, and water-powered backups that use municipal water pressure to create a vacuum and pull water out. Check valves matter in either setup, since they prevent discharged water from flowing back into the pit.

A roaring or banging noise usually points to a mechanical issue, often debris caught in the impeller. Irregular or constant cycling is another red flag. Sump pumps generally last 7 to 10 years overall, with submersible models running 8 to 12 years and pedestal pumps often reaching 15 to 20 years. Damp climates and low-lying properties can shorten that lifespan considerably, and so can heavy usage or poor original installation.

Visible rust or corrosion can impede function and may contaminate the water passing through, while iron bacteria buildup can clog the pump entirely. Slow pumping, meanwhile, may simply mean the unit lacks enough horsepower for your home’s water volume or pipe layout; most standard homes do well with a 1/3 to 1/2 HP pump.
